New York – Christie’s New York celebrates Asian Art Week with nine auctions, six live; three online. Live sales begin 19 September with Japanese and Korean Art, featuring Japanese woodblock prints, lacquer works, sculptures, ceramics, metalworks, and important Korean works of art and paintings. Live sales continue 20 September with South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, installation, and book illustration. Four live sales take place 21 September: The LJZ Collection of Chinese Jades, outstanding works ranging from the Han to Qing dynasties; Mineo Hata: An Instinctive Eye, a fine collection spanning the geography of Asia; Marchant: Eight Treasures for the Wanli Emperor, masterworks of Ming Dynasty porcelain; Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, which concludes 22 September and includes outstanding pieces from important private collections, including ceramics, cloisonné, lacquer, jade, scholar’s objects, textiles, and important classical furniture. The online sales are The Moke Mokotoff Collection, Arts of India, Arts of Asia Online.

ASIAN ART WEEK | LIVE AUCTION OVERVIEW:

Japanese and Korean Art19 September 2023 | 10:00 AMThis season’s Japanese and Korean Art sale is led by a fine woodblock print by the master Toshusai Sharaku, two impressions of Hokusai’s Great Wave, and an important Joseon Period white porcelain jar and sculpture. Among the diverse selection, this sale also features an excellent of example of Heian Period Kannon sculpture; works from Enku; a fine group of Japanese woodblock prints; lacquer works; sculptures; ceramics; metalworks; and important Korean works of art and paintings.

South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art20 September 2023 | 10:00 AMA wide offering of works across several styles and genres including painting, sculpture, printmaking, installation, and book illustration. Many of the works were acquired directly from the studios of South Asia’s most renowned artists and are completely fresh to the market from renowned private collections including those of the Abrams Family, the Ram Kumar Family and Mahinder and Sharad Tak. Highlights include masterpieces by Maqbool Fida Husain, Sayed Haider Raza and Francis Newton Souza. Alongside these modern masters is featured work by pioneering artists like Abanindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, Abdur Rahman Chughtai and Narayan Shridhar Bendre, as well as notable works by Manjit Bawa, Ganesh Pyne, Ram Kumar, Rashid Choudhury, and George Keyt among others.

The LJZ Collection of Chinese Jades21 September 2023 | 9:00 AMA collection of more than 40 outstanding pieces ranging from the Han to Qing dynasties. This collection is remarkable in its extensive publication and exhibition history. Works boast illustrious provenance, having passed through the hands of renowned connoisseurs and dealers such as Chung Wah Pui (The Hei-Chi Collection), Professor Cheng Te-k’un (The Mu-Fei Collection), Reginald Howard Reed Palmer, James and Marilynn Alsdorf, Robert H. Ellsworth, Bluett & Sons, and Eskenazi. The sale is led by a superb and finely carved archaistic white jade rhyton from the Qianlong period. Other highlights include an exceptional yellow jade figure of a recumbent hound dated to the 12th-15th century and a very fine white jade figure of a recumbent horse from the 18th century.

Mineo Hata: An Instinctive Eye21 September 2023 | 10:15 AMChristie’s is delighted to present this fine collection of Chinese ceramics and works of art that were assembled with a singular aesthetic. Mineo Hata developed his esteemed collection participating in major auctions and buying pieces in his taste one after another. With a keen sensibility, Hata displayed a deep appreciation for these objects rooted in the hope that his collection would be passed down from generation to generation. An outstanding example of his collection is a magnificent and important large Longquan celadon Kinuta vase.

Marchant: Eight Treasures for the Wanli Emperor21 September 2023 | 11:00 AMThis sale offers discerning connoisseurs the opportunity to acquire masterworks of porcelain from the reign of emperor Wanli (1573-1620) upon the auspicious occasion of the 450th anniversary of his ascension to the throne. Leading the sale is The Keswick ‘Hundred Deer’ Jar. Other highlights include an exceptional pair of large wucai ‘garlic-mouth vases’ and a superb and exceptionally rare doucai ‘bajixiang’ bowl. Founded in 1925 by Samuel Sydney Marchant in London, Marchant is one of the world’s most venerable dealers of Chinese art and specializes in imperial Ming and Qing ceramics.

Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art21 September 2023 | 11:30 AM22 September 2023 | 9:00 AMThis sale features outstanding works from a number of important private collections of ceramics, cloisonné enamels, lacquer, jade, scholar’s objects, textiles, and important classical Chinese furniture. Highlights include a 17th-century magnificent and extremely rare huanghuali clothes rack, an exquisite Yongle-period blue and white bracket-lobed dish, and a large early 15th-century gilt-bronze mirror, as well as a group of forty works from the collection of Japanese collector Dr. Hiroshi Horiuchi and a curated selection of porcelains from the collection of Professor and Mrs. Yu Chunming.

ASIAN ART WEEK | ONLINE AUCTION OVERVIEW:The Moke Mokotoff Collection13 September 2023 10:00 AM – 26 September 2023 10:00 AMJohn ‘Moke’ Mokotoff (1950-2022) was a devoted Buddhist practitioner and an esteemed dealer in Asian art. This sale is a small fraction of the art he collected, but includes some of his most treasured objects: a very rare 18th-century painting of Bhavaviveka belonging to the same set as the Sakya Pandita painting he donated to Sakya Trizin; the superb Ming gilt-bronze figure of Hevajra and Nairatmya; the Tibetan gilt-bronze figure of Avadhutipa and the Khasa Malla gilt-bronze figure of Vajrasattva, which were both on his personal altar. The Moke Mokotoff Collection encapsulates many of his beloved and varied areas of interest within the field, and it is the hope of his family that his passion for these objects will be passed on to their new owners.

Arts of India13 September 2023 10:00 AM – 27 September 2023 9:00 AMThis Asian Art Week, Christie’s is pleased to debut Arts of India, featuring a curated selection of paintings and sculpture from South Asia. Headlining the sale is a large and important painted pichvai depicting Vishnu in his cosmic form, Vishvarupa. The sale also highlights important court paintings, including a folio from the ‘Bharany’ Ramayana series, a large format scene from Purkhu’s Kirata Arjuniya, and five folios from a Nepalese Bhagavata Purana series. These works are offered alongside Indian and Southeast Asian sculptures, and a group of Gandharan sculpture with storied provenance, featuring works from the estate of the esteemed archeologist, Martha Joukowsky.
