Eclectic works by Yinka Shonibare, Abdoulaye Konaté, Wole Lagunju, Samuel Fosso and rising star Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga, will be on view, all of whom put fabric and textile at the centre of their creation. Yinka Shonibare’s Bad School Boy includes the artist’s signature Victorian inspired clothing, Konaté’s elaborate shredded work uses his signature slip technique, and Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga’s elegiac figures are draped in swathes of rich and highly detailed cloth – in a manner that recalls the textiles of the Old Masters. The auction follows the exceptional results seen in October 2019, when Sotheby’s Modern & Contemporary African Art auction totalled £4 million – the highest total ever achieved in this category.
