Printed Matter / St Marks is excited to present a new window exhibition showcasing work by Richard O. Tyler and other members of the Uranian Phalanstery. The Phalanstery was founded in 1958 by Tyler and Dorothea Baer on East 4th Street before being formally incorporated in 1974; now relocated to Hamilton Heights, it is a gathering place for artists incorporating spirituality (including both Eastern and Western religious, esoteric, and gnostic teachings and traditions) into their lives and work. The Phalanstery had deep involvement and influence in the burgeoning avant garde and countercultural scenes of the East Village and Lower East Side (Tyler sold his many broadsides and fine art editions from a ‘free-press’ pushcart inside the Judson Church). In 2017, Printed Matter hosted an expansive survey of works by Tyler—read more here.
The exhibition centers a reproduction of Tyler's seminal work, The Planets, a folio of woodblock prints depicting each planet in our solar system along with its astrological symbol. Printed on vellum paper, the prints affixed to the window receive light to produce an effect not unlike stained glass, making the imagery visible to visitors both outside and inside the bookstore. The Planets will be accompanied by facsimiles of broadsides published by Uranian Press, as well as a selection of original rare books and prints by Tyler, Baer, and more.
The exhibition runs from Thursday, April 5th through Saturday, May 13th. Please join us for an opening celebration this Saturday, April 8th from 4 to 6 PM.
