T HOMO FACTUS ESTSacred and Profane in the Spirituality of Palestrina

Today’s concert dedicated to Pier Luigi da Palestrina is an opportunity to remember that Renaissance art placed man at the center of all its forms of expression. Even in the most traditional manifestations of sacred music, the listener, the faithful, and even human beings themselves seem to be allowed to elevate themselves towards the Creator, almost emulating His greatness. The main characteristic of Renaissance music, especially throughout the 16th century, is a kind of noble and profound sensuality. The inspiration of the musicians who worked during that period, rather than coming from above, seems to develop in a necessary and explosive way, the culmination of life experiences filtered through compositional expertise, which reached its highest levels in polyphonic creation during the Renaissance. In this sense, Palestrina’s work is a kind of spiritual reconciliation: Palestrinian sound is a luminous synthesis of all the compositional developments of this period. With or without explicit references to liturgical chant – the Gregorian chant that still permeates every composition – Palestrina knows how to harmonize the complexity of Flemish-style polyphonic research with a musical sensibility based on melodiousness, which is inherently sacred but entirely human, and, in many ways, profoundly Roman as well.
