The Modern Muse | 22nd October – 24th November Visit Shapero Modern this autumn and come face to face with some of the most iconic portraits in modern and contemporary art.The Modern Muse will showcase artworks by Pablo Picasso, David Hockney, Andy Warhol and Banksy, to name but a few.
Each work on display in this selling exhibition will demonstrate the important role the muse has always played in the life of an artist, as well as the way in which artists themselves become each other’s muses.
We can’t take our eyes off…British icon Kate Moss and Pop Artist Andy Warhol became Banksy’s muses in 2005 when he created this exquisite portrait Kate Moss – Original Colour Way of Moss with the hair and trademark beauty spot of Marilyn Monroe. A playful nod to Warhol’s own ‘Marilyn Monroe’ series (1967), Banksy uses the portrait of Moss with the same intentions as Warhol—the commodification of visual icons.
Andy Warhol in turn was inspired by the genius of the Italian Renaissance Master, Sandro Botticelli, when he created this work featuring a detail of Botticelli’s famous ‘Birth of Venus’. We will never know for certain who Botticelli's muse was, but Venus can certainly be included amongst Warhol's series of inspiring famous females, which included Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and Queen Elizabeth II.
