AUCTIONS 23 MAY

NEW YORK, 15 May 2019 – Sotheby’s is pleased to present highlights from our spring sales of Important Design and Dreaming in Glass: Masterworks by Tiffany Studios on 23 May in New York.

The Important Design auction will offer an array of exceptional works spanning the last century, anchored by an early example of Marc Newson’s iconic Pod of Drawers and complemented by a diverse selection of Contemporary design pieces, including examples by François-Xavier Lalanne, Claude Lalanne and Martin Szekely. A dedicated chapter of American Studio pieces will showcase masterworks by Harry Bertoia, Wendell Castle, George Nakashima and Paul Evans. Additional highlights in the sale include outstanding European pre- and post-war design by such design masters as Alberto Giacometti, Jean-Michel Frank, Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eugène Printz, Jean Royère and Pierre Jeanneret.

The dedicated offering of works by Tiffany Studios is led by the magnificent “Fish and Waves” Table Lamp, one of the firm’s most artistic and ingenious masterworks and the only known example of this complex and dazzling design. Additional highlights in the sale include a striking “Birches and Irises” Landscape Window (estimate $200/300,000), as well as stunning examples of the firm’s leaded glass lighting, featuring the iconic “Elaborate Peony” and “Snowball” lamps (estimates $600/800,000 and $500/700,000, respectively).

All 206 works on offer are now on view in Sotheby’s newly-reimagined and expanded York Avenue galleries through 22 May.
