The PalaisPopulaire is reopening with Christo & Jeanne-Claude: Projects 1963-2020, an exhibition that honors what is probably the world’s most famous artist couple, whom the Centre Pompidou will soon devote the show Christo et Jeanne-Claude: Paris! as a foretaste of the spectacular wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in 2021. Christo and his partner Jeanne-Claude, who died in 2009, worked on this project for 58 years.

But in Berlin, visitors can already delve into the life’s work of these exceptional artists with an exhibition that documents all of their spectacular wrappings from the early 1960s to the present day thanks to loans from the Ingrid and Thomas Jochheim Collection.

The show focuses on one of the most ambitious actions by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, a project that connects them to the German capital: the wrapping of the Berlin Reichstag 25 years ago, which attracted over five million visitors. The exhibition documents the many years of work, thought, and planning that went into this temporary major event.

ArtMag guides you through the exhibition and brings you an exclusive interview with Christo, in which he talks about the genesis of his works on the occasion of his exhibition at the Hara Museum in Tokyo.

To ensure that as many people as possible can experience the works of Christo and Jeanne-Claude in Berlin during the coronavirus crisis, the exhibition can be visited free of charge until mid-August. A maximum of 35 people are permitted in the exhibition rooms at the same time. Additional protective measures have also been put in place. You can find the exhibition catalogue in the ShopPopulaire.

The Frieze, which has been supported by Deutsche Bank as the main sponsor for 17 years, also had to reschedule due to Covid-19 and has transferred its New York edition to the virtual realm. From May 6 to 15, Frieze New York will take place as Frieze Viewing Room, an ambitious digital platform on which more than 200 international galleries present themselves virtually. It functions like the fair, with previews and public days for which anyone can register. Needless to say, Deutsche Bank is participating with a virtual showroom.

For preview guests, there will be a sneak-peak video tour through the upcoming exhibition Time Present showcasing international art photography from the bank’s corporate art collection at the PalaisPopulaire to mark the collection’s 40th and Deutsche Bank’s 150th anniversary. The public days are devoted to Deutsche Bank's “Artist of the Year.” Since 2010, Deutsche Bank has supported promising artists who have created an individual, socially relevant oeuvre and work with the media of paper and photography—not with a cash prize, but with an exhibition tour and a catalogue publication. In the Frieze Viewing Room, works and video documentations on all of the artists who received this award from its incipience in 2010 will be shown, from Wangechi Mutu to Caline Aoun. And we are eagerly awaiting the announcement of Deutsche Bank's “Artist of the Year” 2021 in September.
