Athena Rare Books Wittgenstein wrote the work while serving in the Austrian army during World War I. He completed the work in August of 1918 and then it stayed with him after his capture and incarceration in an Italian prisoner of war camp at Monte Cassino. From there, a copy was sent to Bertrand Russell via John Maynard Keynes.
