AUCTION IN NEW YORK 12 NOVEMBERNEW YORK, 29 October 2018 – Sotheby’s is pleased to unveil highlights of our 12 November 2018 Evening Sale of Impressionist & Modern Art in New York. The 65 lots on offer will open for public view in Sotheby’s York Avenue galleries beginning this Friday, 2 November, as part of our marquee exhibitions of Impressionist & Modern, Contemporary and American Art.

THE BEAUTIFUL & DAMNEDThis November, as the world pauses to remember the events of the First World War on the centenary of the Armistice of 11 November 1918 that drew it to a close, Sotheby’s has brought together a group of works that illustrates the tremendous and varied impact of the war on the artistic production of those whose lives it transformed.

Incorporated into the Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale on 12 November, the offering will assemble works that capture the period from immediately prior to the outbreak of the war through to its aftermath, together telling the artistic history of that momentous period. The works will be presented under the moniker ‘The Beautiful and Damned’, in reference to the 1922 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald – the title of which alone captures the vicissitudes of the time.

SUPERB SURREALIST WORKS BY MAGRITTE & MIRÓThe Evening Sale features an ensemble of Surrealist works, led by René Magritte’s Le Principe du plaisir (The Pleasure Principle) from 1937 (estimate $15/20 million). The entrancing portrait depicts Edward James, one of the most influential patrons of Surrealist art, who was introduced to Magritte by Salvador Dalí in 1937. Commissioned directly by James, the present portrait was rendered from a photograph of the patron that was taken according to the artist’s specifications by fellow Surrealist, Man Ray. Magritte envisioned the concept for the present work before ever meeting James – in 1936, the artist included an ink sketch resembling the oil on the first page of a hand-made book honoring the Surrealist poet, Paul Éluard.

Executed in 1934, Joan Miró’s monumental Figure leads a trio of works on offer by the artist (estimate $7/10 million). Filled with dazzling color and tonal variation, the pastel embodies the powerful works produced by the artist as chaos loomed over Spain and Europe at large near the onset of the Spanish Civil War. In the late summer and fall of 1934, Miró worked on a series of 15 pastels on velour paper, primarily featuring single figures with markedly gendered attributes. Similar examples from this groundbreaking series can be found in some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.

RESTITUTED MASTERWORKS OF MODERNISMThis season’s sale is distinguished by a number of important works that bear witness to the history of Jewish collectors who were persecuted during World War II.

Painted during the height of his association with Die Brücke, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Weiblicher Akt (Female Nude) & Blaue Dame im Tiergarten (Lady in Blue in the Park) is an enigmatic dual-sided canvas that encapsulates his central stylistic contributions to the German avant-garde (estimate $6/8 million). Painted in 1908, Weiblicher Akt utilizies bold brushstrokes and warm, vivid hues to depict a seated nude – in contrast, Blue Dame im Tiergarten, which was painted in 1912 amidst Kirchner’s celebrated Berlin street scenes, employs a cool palette and traditional woodcut techniques to characterize the refined elegance of his longtime partner and frequent sitter, Erna Schilling.

The dynamic work comes from the collection of Regina Freudenberg of Berlin, who was an heiress to the Kaufhaus Gerson – the premier fashion store in Berlin at the time. Freudenberg assembled a magnificent collection of contemporary art during the first quarter of the 20th century, though the Kirchner is published as having left her hands by 1933. Kaufhaus Gerson was aryanized in 1936, and Regina’s home was lost the following year. The present owner is offering this work in the November sale in cooperation with the heirs of Regina Freudenberg.

Painted in 1913, Dämmernde Stadt (Die Kleine Stadt II) (City in Twilight (The Small City II)) is one of Egon Schiele's finest landscapes remaining in private hands (estimate $12/18 million). The dreamlike view above the city of Krumau – birthplace of the artist's mother – documents the pivotal period during which Schiele established his singular and now-iconic visual language, after years of shadowing his mentor Gustav Klimt.

Dämmernde Stadt was purchased in 1928 by Elsa Koditschek, a young Jewish widow living in Vienna. During the course of her harrowing persecution by the Nazis following the annexation of Austria in 1938, the work was forcibly sold in payment of alleged debts to the very person who helped Elsa survive. Sotheby's will present the work this November through a private restitution agreement between the present owners and Elsa’s heirs. Separate release available

Among the finest examples by their respective artists ever to appear at auction, Oskar Kokoschka’s portrait of Joseph de Montesquiou-Fezensac from 1910 (estimate $15/20 million) and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s compelling Das Soldatenbad (Artillerymen) from 1915 (estimate $15/20 million) both encapsulate the seismic shifts occurring in the visual arts during the period leading up to and including the onset of World War I.

In addition to their inherent art historical significance, both paintings are distinguished by their illustrious provenance and remarkable stories of restitution to the heirs of art-world luminary Alfred Flechtheim – the German collector, art dealer, publisher, patron and bon vivant. Prior to its voluntary restitution earlier this year, Kirchner’s Das Soldatenbad had resided in the distinguished collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York for three decades, and in The Museum of Modern Art prior to that. Like the Kirchner, Kokoschka’s Joseph de Montesquiou-Fezensac was voluntarily returned to Flechtheim’s heirs in 2018 by the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. As in the past, the Flechtheim heirs are expecting to use some of the proceeds for charitable causes, and for Holocaust remembrance and education purposes. Separate release available

THE MOST IMPORTANT WORK OF AMERICAN MODERN ART EVER TO APPEAR AT AUCTIONMarsden Hartley’s triumphant Pre-War Pageant stands as a seminal painting in the development of Modern art, and represents one of the first examples of an American artist working in a purely abstract idiom (estimate in the region of $30 million). The canvas hails from a groundbreaking group of paintings that Hartley produced in Berlin between 1913 and 1915 – the majority of which reside in museum collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Coming to auction this November from the collection of Ed and Deborah Shein, this magnificent painting headlined an exhibition of American Modernist works from their collection at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. in 2010. THE TRIUMPH OF COLOR: IMPORTANT WORKS FROM A PRIVATE EUROPEAN COLLECTIONPut together primarily in the 1970s and 80s, the present collection today represents one of the finest assemblages of post-Impressionist and Modern Art in private hands. The collection is defined by three superb masterworks by Wassily Kandinsky and rare works by the key protagonists of Fauvism and German Expressionism. Several of the paintings were loaned to the Courtauld Institute of Art in London for over 15 years, where they provided a unique display of works from the Fauve movement, the Expressionists and the route to Abstraction in the early-20th century.

The three major paintings by Wassily Kandinsky chart the artist’s development across four decades from the earliest successes to his greatest later achievements. The group is led by one of the last 1913 oil paintings left in private hands, Zum Thema Jüngstes Gericht (On the Theme of the Last Judgment), a unique composition from this prime year of Kandinsky’s career during which he reached the summit of his path to Abstraction (estimate $22/35 million). An early abstract masterpiece, Improvisation auf Mahagoni (Improvisation on Mahogany), was painted in 1910 during the artist’s Murnau period (estimate $15/20 million). A stunning composition from the artist’s Paris period, painted in 1939, Le Rond rouge (The Red Circle) is an exceptional large-format oil on canvas dating from the exhilarating years he spent in France (estimate $18/25 million).

The core of the collection has always been works by the Fauves, including three outstanding canvases by Maurice de Vlaminck. Paysage au bois mort (Landscape with Dead Wood) (estimate $12/18 million), Pêcheur à Chatou (Fisherman at Chatou) (estimate $9/14 million) and Nu couché (Reclining Nude) (estimate $2/3 million) represent the full spectrum of Vlaminck’s masterpieces. Executed in 1905 and 1906 at the height of the Fauve movement, the three works boast remarkable, thickly-painted surfaces and vivid palettes. Further highlights include exceptional works by some of the key artists of the German Expressionist movement, including Alexej von Jawlensky, Max Pechstein, August Macke and Heinrich Campendonk. LUDWIG MEIDNER’S APOCALYPTIC LANDSCAPEExecuted in 1912 near the brink of the Great War, Ludwig Meidner’s Apokalyptische Landschaft (Apocalyptic Landscape) is a cataclysmic and arresting urban scene that reflects the social, political, emotional and artistic upheaval in Germany at the time (estimate $12/18 million). The city under the night sky is illuminated by two volcanic explosions of red and orange flames, while buildings collapse under the tremors of an apocalyptic earthquake – anticipating the destruction of Europe and the recurrent conflict that was to blemish the future course of the 20th century. Apokalyptische Landschaft is one of approximately 15 paintings from Meidner’s series of apocalyptic landscapes executed between 1912 and 1916, with important examples residing in international institutions including the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, the Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles (LACMA). CLASSIC IMPRESSIONIST PAINTINGS BY MONET & PISSARROThe November sale offers exquisite examples of classic Impressionism, highlighted by Claude Monet’s energetic Bouquet de glaïeuls, lis et marguerites, a rare still life painted in 1878 (estimate $7/10 million). Having temporarily abandoned the still-life motif during his years at Argenteuil earlier in the decade, Monet embraced the subject again in Vétheuil, where he lived from the summer of 1878 until late 1881, often setting up his easel in his own garden to paint the fecund vegetation that surrounded him. Two captivating works by Camille Pissarro – Prairie avec vaches, brume, soleil couchant à Éragny from 1891, and Primrose Hill, Londres from 1890-92 (estimates $2/3 million each) – illustrate his individualized approach to pointillism through staccato brushstrokes. Acquired directly from Pissarro by his dealer Durand-Ruel in 1892, Primrose Hill remained with the family until 1921, when it entered the collection of Gabrielle Oppenheim-Errera. Gabrielle married businessman and philosopher of science Paul Oppenheim in 1912, and relocated from Frankfurt to the United States in the 1930s. At their home in Princeton, New Jersey, Gabrielle and Paul often hosted their close friend, Albert Einstein. The work, which remained in their collection for over 75 years, is on offer along with four other paintings from a Distinguished American Collection, with proceeds benefitting charitable causes.

MASTERPIECES OF MEXICAN MODERNISMMajor works of Modern Latin American art are topped by the finest landscape by Rufino Tamayo ever to appear at auction. Paisaje del Paricutín (Volcán en Erupción) (Landscape of el Paricutín) was painted in 1947, following an enigmatic volcanic eruption in Michoacán, Mexico four years earlier that captured the attention of citizens and tourists alike (estimate $1.3/1.8 million). The recollections of onlookers who witnessed the explosion influenced Tamayo’s vision of the natural event: mountains of ash accumulate around brilliant bursts of orange and red flames, while the sky clouds with smoke above. The artist’s depiction of the natural phenomenon also relates to a series of works that Tamayo produced during the war years, in which he began to integrate allusions to the cosmos and the atomic age.
